Spring Trip Recap

The Jumbos spring trip once again was successful due to the great support from Alumni and friends.  The equipment van departed on the 17th of March, manned by Coach Kenny with Coach BWC navigating, marking the beginning of the trip.  The rest of the team flew out of Logan the next day.  The guys came out of the gate strong winning their first four games scoring an average of 10 runs per game.  The Jumbos dropped two in a row before rebounding at the end of the week winning their last four games to finish at 8 – 2.  This trip marks the first time a Jumbos squad has left Virginia Beach with 8 wins since 2000.

It was a great surprise to see alum John Hervey A’60  at the Lynchburg game.  John made the trek to Lynchburg from his home in Alexandria, VA to take in a game and snap some photos of the Jumbos in action.  It was great to hear from Dave Katzman, Chris Decembrele, and Ben Simon, checking in via text after every game.  Uncle Joe was once again along for the ride bringing countless hours of laughs to the table no matter win or lose, luckily we had a few more W’s this year.  Last but certainly not least it was a honor to have John Shelvey with us for the final weekend of the trip all the way from Costa Rica.

We would like to thank the parents for once again arranging a family dinner on Saturday night in Va Beach.  The kids love it.  The family breakfast was another great endnote to the trip on Sunday morning before playing Virginia Wesleyan.  All of these events and the whole trip would not be the same without the families, friends and alums of the Tufts University Baseball program, Thank You!!

Tufts Alum Sends Team Source Of Motivation

4/28/10

Todd Boutwell '01 and Tom Walsh '89 have stepped up with some late inning relief.  Their membership renewals have gotten us even closer to our Diamond Club goal.  We are now only 8 members short of 35.  We thank you all for your continued support.  Hope to see everyone at the golf tournament and Alumni game the weekend of 5/14!!

4/7/10

As we approach the halfway mark of the 2010 season we have been infused with new energy from the following Diamond Club members. Mark Fisher '77 a great supporter of the program and golf tournament leads the second half surge with his renewal, he is accompanied by our westernmost member all the way from Hawaii Robert Cyboron class of 1970; thanks Robert glad to know the Jumbos are being followed on the islands. 1994 captain Dr. Matt Zipoli has once again stepped up to the plate to support the Jumbos along with classmate Jay Rando, thanks to Zip and Jay for being such stalwarts for the program. Finally new and young blood joins the Diamond Club as Dave Katzman '09 becomes the club's youngest member. Katzy and I texted the whole trip this year, it is awesome to know how much you all care about each team. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going as this brings our membership to 25  (10 to go to meet our goal!!!)

3/15/10

Two more alums have stepped to the fore as we are about to step on the plane to head south. John Shelvey '95 based out of Costa Rica and intent on making an appearance in Va. Beach next weekend and Matt Marengi '99 who is a poor man's Bob Villa have become the latest members of the Diamond club to renew their memberships. A special thanks to these former captains for a great sendoff!!

3/11/10

A new pack of Jumbos come to the fore in the Diamond Club roster this week. We have three former captains continuing to exhibit their leadership skills, the guy who won a ECAC championship with a big hit up the middle and a left handed hitting outfielder with a great sense of humor and a favorite of former Coach Mike Sweeney. Thanks to former captains Roger Grenier '88, Jack Erickson '92 and Pat Fernan '99 for their wonderful support of the program. We all look forward to a Jumbo favorite Pete Fernan (Pat's dad) manning the grill the Alumni Game in May. Dana Nielsen '96 comes through again with his Diamond Club support just like he did @ Babson in the ECACs with his big hit. Finally thanks to Tom Walsh '94 for his great support of the program, Walshie always made us laugh but was a helluva ballplayer as well.

3/5/10

We add a pair of crafty lefthanders to the Diamond Club squad today. Matt Lyman '96 and Brian Symmons '98 come out of the pen to help the Jumbos on to victory and help us reach our goal of 34 Diamond Club members in 2010. Brian has been instrumental in the success of the Diamond Club and Matty has been a stalwart of the program coaching for a few years after his graduation and being a very loyal alum.  It is easy to be successful with help like this!!!

2/18/10

After announcing the top third of the lineup last week we continue with 4 additional members of the Diamond Club lineup.  These supportive sluggers show their range as they represent classes from 1952 to 1990. Bob Taft '52, a member of the Tufts College World Series team once again has stepped up to the plate with his membership, following Bob all the way from Oakland, CA is Oscar Porter '69. Oscar has been a stalwart supporting the program throughout the years. Coming a little further east from CA to Iowa is Dr. Matt Howard. Matt is a teammate of Coach Casey and both have sworn an oath to each other to continue to tell everyone how good they both were!! Finally from the class of 1990 Mike Ward enters the lineup, Mike is the former baseball coach at Salem (MA) HS; we have one of his players Colby Boulay '12 on the Jumbo's roster. Thanks to all these perennial sluggers of support.

2010 Diamond Club News

We are pleased to announce the first six members to show their support for Tufts Baseball by renewing their membership to the Diamond Club.  Two members of the 1950 Tufts World Series team; Jack Fitzsimmons '52 and classmate Ken Fettig lead off this year's 2010 Diamond Club lineup, quite fitting that these two men lead the way while celebrating the 60th anniversary of that outstanding team. Governor Bill Richardson '70 fills the three spot in the lineup with his support, this is Bill's inaugural season with the Diamond Club, the three spot is appropriate for such a heavy hitter in the political world. Two stalwarts Jon Mugar '98 and Colin Cash '95 clean up the bases from the 4 and 5 slots. Jon and Colin have been wonderful to the program and Colin's business Atlantic Asphalt & Equipment has agreed to be the sponsor of The 2010 Tufts Baseball Alumni Golf Tournament as well. Finally Coach Case '80 will hit six with his membership. There is a long tradition of pride and excellence associated with Tufts Baseball and Tufts University as evidenced by the support of all of our alums. Don’t hesitate to contact us at John.Casey@tufts.edu if you have any questions about the Diamond Club.  Thanks Jack, Ken, Gov. Richardson, Jon and Colin, you’ve gotten us off to a great start.  That’s what the top of the lineup is supposed to do!

2009 Tufts Baseball Holiday Gathering Wrap-up

Over 20 Tufts baseball alumni and friends were able to attend the holiday gathering at the On The Hill Tavern in Somerville.  We hung out, caught up, and shared memories with each other from 6:00 until closing time.  Coach Samko was in attendance donning the Tennessee hat that “Lane Kiffin's wife gave him as a present.”  Being a coach at Tufts Coach Samko was unable to participate in the “First 5 Door Prize contest.  The first prize was awarded to Charlie Lonero.  Fresh back from Afganistan Charlie won a Tufts Baseball Fleece.  Brian McDavitt was next to walk through the door and was awarded Tufts Baseball wind pants.  Chris Decembrele followed shortly there after and received a nice Tufts golf polo.  Eric Catalanotti was the fourth alumni/friend to come and won a Tufts Baseball flex fit hat.  Finally Mike Grassi arrived and got the final gift, a great pair of Tufts Baseball sweatpants.

Through the course of the night we learned of Coach Caravella’s dream about a “Mad Cap Adventure” he shared with Coach Samko only to end with Coach Casey telling him he should have known better than to hang with Satan.  Many wings, nachos, and beverages were consumed throughout the night.  Matty Lyman and John Mugar competed in a heated battle of Buck Hunter.  The winner was unclear due to the game being broken, although ask Matty and you know which answer you will get.

Everyone once again was in the giving spirit and we were able to raise over $350 to donate to the Coach Burr Scholarship Fund.  We thank everyone for your generous donations.  We all had fun and it was great seeing everyone again.  We want to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season!!!!

JUMBOS TAKE PART IN FOJ RACE 10/4/09

28 players got up early last Sunday and drove to Amherst College to take part in a Friends of Jaclyn 5K/Fun walk fundraiser for the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation in honor of our teammate Adrian. It was a great day and the players did an outstanding job. Jack Dilday was the first  Jumbo to cross the finish line followed closely by Tom Hill and Matt Collins. Coach Brian Casey was the only coaching staff member to run the 5K and finished immediately after the three-legged dog!!! Coach Case and Coach Kenny had a nice kick to finish out the fun walk. It was a memorable event and especially touching at the pre-race rally as several parents spoke. Adrian is doing well and we look to have him become even more involved with the program this season as he makes great strides.

The Old Time Baseball Game

Tufts Baseball was well represented at Steve Buckley's Old Time Baseball Game.  Kevin Casey did it with the bat as he reached base in all 4 of his plate appearances, Brian Casey took care of the side in the 6th inning striking out two and forcing a ground out to first.  For the opposing team, Sophomore catcher Matt Collins played solid behind the plate throwing out three would be base stealers.

Our Teammate

We would like to introduce the newest member of our team.  His name is Adrian Misic.  We adopted him last fall through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.  Many had the honor to meet Adrian at the golf tournament.  He is a very special kid and we plan on having him as part of the Jumbos for many years to come.
